If you had to pick just one novel by a British author, what would it be? Jane Austen or Bridget Jones? Lord of the Rings or Lord of the Flies?

Channel 5 is conducting a survey about your favourite British novel and we’d love to know what you think. The results will be presented in a special programme later this year.

We’ve come up with a shortlist of 30 – presented below in alphabetical order. We’ve used everything from sales figures, previous surveys, and critical opinions to arrive at a list that’s full of favourites old and new. To qualify, authors must have British nationality – not just to write in English. We have selected just one novel from each author. And we’ve excluded books that are primarily aimed at children – even if grown-ups do love them too. So sorry Harry Potter, you didn’t make it this time!

We have had to exclude countless wonderful novels from the list – so if your favourite doesn’t appear, please forgive us and do vote for your best from this collection.

Now it’s up to you to decide which of these 30 great books should be Number 1.

To protect against multiple votes, we require that you login to your Google account to vote. Thank you.
